Dr Helen Webber and HTX Team win prestigious awards in annual Royal Aeronautical Society Honours List
The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) recently released its list of winners of its annual Honours, Medals and Awards for 2020 and Reaction Engines’ Dr Helen Webber and the HTX Team were among the winners.

Dr Helen Webber, engineering project lead responsible at system level for the engineering leadership and technical solution of the fully integrated SABRE Core Engine Ground Demonstrator (aka DEMO-A), was named as the recipient of the prestigious Sir Ralph Robins medal. This medal is awarded to one engineer per year in recognition of excellence in leadership in truly outstanding aerospace projects.

The HTX team was responsible for the full validation of SABRE’s heat exchanger at temperatures representative of Mach 5 airflow. The team consisted of a wide collaboration of key functions across the Company from the UK and US and incorporated secondees from BAE Systems and Airborne Engineering Ltd. The official RAeS citation stated:

“This was a remarkable test campaign by a highly motivated team who used their deep understanding of the physics and engineering of the system to prove the viability of operating air breathing engines from zero to speeds far in excess of any aircraft to date.”

Dr Webber had this to say following the announcement:

“These awards are a fantastic recognition of a lot of hard work and collaboration. Reaction Engines teams from both the UK and US worked closely on this project with our external partners to achieve something that has never been done before. This was a truly exceptional project and one which presented a unique set of challenges. Every team member played a part in making it a successful campaign and moving Reaction Engines one step closer to the realisation of SABRE.”

Coming just a few months after winning honours at the Royal Academy of Engineering’s annual ceremony, these awards further recognise the outstanding achievement of the validation of the HTX test article and demonstrates the expertise, innovation and professionalism of the wider team.
