Business Development Manager

The Role

The Applied Technologies team is commercialising revolutionary thermal management technologies developed on the SABRE programme into exciting markets including electric transport, zero-emission aerospace, motorsport, and more efficient power generation.  This key role will develop customers and key strategic partnerships to drive growing commercial revenues and ultimately speed up the adoption of sustainable transport globally.


You will be part of the Applied Technologies core team, working closely with the Applied Technologies Director, Sector Leads and two other Business Development Managers to deliver a sales strategy to increase the company’s revenue targets through direct sales, licence agreements, partnerships and strategic alliances.


Our technology is truly unique with the ability to enable a step change for our customers, so we are looking for someone with both technical and commercial understanding to maximise value by intelligently targeting opportunities.


Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Lead Business Development activities with a focus on zero-emission transport (air and ground):
    • Develop a broad external network and build effective relationships with new and existing partners and customers globally
    • Target zero-emission automotive, motorsport, and aerospace applications such as hydrogen or electric powertrains
    • Find, assess, and promote new business opportunities by understanding the technology fit and value to the customer
    • Seek out and attend suitable conferences and funding opportunities
    • Steer the bid management process for new opportunities, working with the rest of the team
    • Manage the creation of the bid deliverables and ensuring review and governance, guiding the creation of high quality proposals
    • Gather voice of the customer to inform new product development and commercialisation strategies for our products
    • Support wider financial planning and projections, competitor and market analysis with support from Commercial and Marketing teams
    • Coordinate business cases and proposals for presentation to the Executive Leadership Team, Board and Investors
    • Develop pricing models for our technology and products
    • Work alongside Marketing to ensure appropriate and focused marketing effort and campaigns
  • Be part of the AT core team, contributing to the development of resource, processes, toolsets
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver strategic planning, business development and sales activities for Applied Technologies
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required in line with the level of responsibility of the post and in order to meet the changing needs of the organisation




  • Previous experience within a business development role with proven success
  • Previous experience working within a product based technology company
  • Experienced with the bid/tender process
  • Experienced in writing business development strategies / business plans
  • Experience writing business cases and proposals both in an R&D and commercial product environment


  • Taking new, disruptive products to market
  • Technology start-up / spin out growth business experience
  • Experience in the sustainable transport sector, particularly hydrogen fuel cells or electric powertrains
  • Global/cultural experience in a techno-commercial environment




  • Scientific or engineering degree or equivalent experience


  • Business accreditation such as MBA

This role attracts a competitive salary and excellent company benefits including 28 days annual leave (increasing to 30 days after 2 years’ service) plus public holidays, employee share scheme, employer matching company pension scheme, life assurance and a contribution towards onsite nursery childcare for children under 3 years of age.  We also offer dynamic working where employees split their time working from home and from our office in Culham.


Salary: £50,000 to £60,000

Contract: Permanent

Working Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week
